How To Spot Roof Damage To Your North London Home

As the first storm of 2019 whipped across the UK this weekend bringing with it winds of 60mph and yellow weather warnings in the wake of Storm Erik we wanted to highlight how important it is to make sure your roof remains in good condition following any storm damage.   Even when a storm produces no rain or hail, your roof can still sustain damage. Strong winds can create stress points on a roof that, over time, can weaken and become compromised. While rooves are designed to resist typical wind speeds, they can be damaged over the years by high winds and wind debris. Replacing missing shingles, loose tiles, flashings and initial roof damage quickly is important to prevent subsequent water damage and high fuel costs that will inevitably result from a roof system that is not working as it should.   To spot any external issues first walk around your house and check the roof for any loose or cracked tiles. On flat roofs look for patches, cracks or tears, blisters or wrinkles. Scrutinise gutters by looking for any signs of leaking seams, loosened fastenings or sections of guttering that are sagging or missing. Check too for blockages in guttering or downpipes caused by moss or leaves blown in on high winds. Keep an eye on your chimney for loose or missing flashing, damage to brickwork or the chimney cap. On your soffits and fascias look for signs of decay or staining which could indicate water is finding it’s way through the protective roof layer. You can also spot roof damage from inside your house. Look out for moisture marks on the walls or ceiling, check out for any brown, yellow or grey stains and peeling paint. This can be an indication of a water leak from a damaged roof. Be sure to also keep an eye out for any damp patches or leaks up in your loft.   If you have roof damage caused by wind and/or flying debris, it’s important to get it fixed immediately. The longer you wait, the more damage will occur. Roof replacement and roof repair costs a lot less when you don’t have to add in the other costs of repairing leaks and water damage. Contact your insurance company to assess the situation and determine whether you should file a claim. Thoroughly document any damage that occurred and keep receipts for all work, including any you do yourself, such as covering windows or holes in your roof to facilitate reimbursement if you file a claim. Many policies will cover these expenses when submitted with a claim.   If your roof is in bad shape and is in desperate need of replacement, then you need specialist from a team that has experience and knowledge in all roofing work.
